How To Use Backdrops and Backgrounds

Using digital backdrops, backgrounds, overlays and textures is a great way to add interest to your photography images, without the expense of purchasing backdrops, going to locations or requiring a tonne of space to store your fabric or canvas backdrops. By using overlays, textures and digital backgrounds you can also change the overall mood and color tone of your image or add things that were not originally there like pretty skies, light flares, fabrics, smoke or clouds, grunge or other interesting textures on backdrops or even completely different scenes! It can enhance your design projects, whether you're creating wall arts, social media posts, posters, or printable puzzle. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you incorporate backdrops into your designs:

Step 1: Log In to Canva

  1. Go to Canva and log in with your credentials.
  2. If you don’t have an account, you can easily sign up for free.

Step 2: Start a New Design

  1. On the homepage, click on the Create a design button at the top-right corner.
  2. Select a design type like Instagram Post, Poster, or any custom size that fits your project. 

Step 3: Upload Your Own Backdrop

  1. Click on the Uploads tab in the left-hand menu.
  2. Select Upload files to upload your backdrop from your computer.
  3. Once uploaded, click on the backdrop to place it on your design canvas.
  4. Resize the backdrop to fit the entire canvas by dragging the corners.
          

Step 4: Upload Your Own Photo

  1. To add your own photo, go to the Uploads tab again and click Upload files.
  2. Select the photo you want to use from your device and upload it.
  3. Click on the uploaded image to add it to your design.
          

Step 5: Remove the Background from Your Photo

  1. Click on the photo in your design, and then click Edit image at the top toolbar.
  2. Under the BG Remover section, click Background Remover (Note: This is a Pro feature). For free, you can go to https://www.remove.bg/ or you can google remove background tool
  3. Canva will automatically remove the background of your photo, leaving only the subject.
                
 

Step 6: Place Your Photo on the Backdrop

  1. Once the background is removed, reposition your photo on top of the digital backdrop by dragging it to the desired location.
  2. You can resize the photo by dragging the corners or rotate it to match the angle of the backdrop.
     

Step 7: Adjust the Photo’s Transparency or Add Effects (Optional)

  1. If you want your photo to blend better with the backdrop, adjust the Transparency by selecting the photo and clicking the Transparency icon in the top toolbar.
  2. You can also add filters, shadows, or other effects by using the Edit image menu to make the design more cohesive.
 

Step 8: Add Additional Elements (Optional)

  1. Add other design elements like overlays, texture or additional images.
   

Step 9: Download Your Final Design

  1. When you're satisfied with your design, click on the Share button at the top-right corner of the screen.
  2. Select Download and choose the file type (PNG, JPG, or PDF) that best suits your needs.
